Industrial Biotechnology („White Biotechnology“) makes use of microorgnaisms or enzymes for the industrial production of chemicals like special and fine chemicals, building blocks for agrocultural or pharmaceutical products, additives for manufacturing as well as bulk chemicals and fuels. Renewable resources are the favoured raw materials for Industrial Biotechnology.

The Institute of Biochemical Engineering (Prof. Weuster-Botz) together with the Research Group Bioseparation Engineering (Prof. Berensmeier) and the Research Group Systems Biotechnology (Prof. Kremling) investigate new methods and processes to improve the industrial use of biocatalysts in the future.
